How it's studied to work
Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) modeled on the natural pineal hormone epithalamin, first developed and studied by Russian researcher Professor Vladimir Khavinson. It is one of the best-known compounds in longevity-focused peptide research.
How it's studied to work
Research explores telomerase activation — the enzyme that adds protective repeats to the ends of chromosomes (telomeres), which shorten as cells age — alongside restoration of age-related decline in pineal hormone production (normalizing melatonin rhythm and sleep architecture), antioxidant defense (increased SOD and catalase activity), and effects on immune aging (T-cell function and thymic activity in older adults).
Areas of research interest
Studied for over 30 years, mostly in Russia, in longevity-focused research contexts covering telomere length, sleep quality and circadian rhythm, immune resilience, and — in animal studies — lifespan extension and reduced incidence of age-related disease.
Who might consider researching it, and who should not
Discussed in the context of biological aging and cellular senescence, poor sleep quality or disrupted circadian rhythm, telomere health, and age-related immune decline. It should be avoided by anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with active cancer or a pituitary/pineal tumor (telomerase activation and neuroendocrine effects raise concern), anyone with severe mental illness without psychiatric supervision, and minors.
Reported effects to be aware of
Reported effects are generally mild but not well studied — headache, mild fatigue, temporary sleep changes (vivid dreams, deeper sleep), and injection site irritation have been reported.
