Glutathione: research overview
Glutathione (GSH) is the body's most abundant intracellular antioxidant — a tripeptide made from glutamate, cysteine and glycine — studied for its role in neutralizing free radicals, supporting liver detoxification, and cellular protection against oxidative damage.
How it's studied to work
Research explores its thiol (-SH) group donating electrons to neutralize free radicals and reactive oxygen species at the cellular level, binding environmental toxins, heavy metals and drug metabolites for safe elimination through the liver's phase II detoxification pathway, supporting T-cell function and lymphocyte proliferation relevant to immune response, and regenerating other antioxidants like vitamin C and E back to their active form.
Areas of research interest
Widely used in clinical and wellness settings. Areas of interest include oxidative stress, fatty liver markers, skin tone evenness/brightness, and immune support tied to chronic inflammation.
Who might consider researching it, and who should not
Discussed in the context of chronic fatigue or oxidative stress, fatty liver or environmental toxin burden, uneven skin tone, and autoimmune or chronic inflammatory conditions. It should be avoided by anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with asthma or severe respiratory disease (may provoke bronchospasm, particularly in nebulized form), anyone with a sulfite/sulfur sensitivity (glutathione contains a thiol group), anyone with severe kidney disease, and anyone with active cancer without their oncologist's input (antioxidants may interact with some chemotherapy agents).
Reported effects to be aware of
Reported effects are generally mild — injection site irritation, occasional bloating or mild GI discomfort, headache, and rare skin-sensitivity changes have been reported. Results on skin tone are described as gradual and subtle, not dramatic.
