GHK-Cu (copper peptide): research overview
GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide (Gly-His-Lys) first identified in human plasma, studied at the cellular level for its role in skin regeneration, hair growth, wound healing, and anti-aging research.
How it's studied to work
Research explores several pathways: stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans (restoring skin firmness and elasticity); reactivating dormant hair follicles and extending the growth phase; recruiting repair cells to injury sites to accelerate wound healing and reduce scarring; and neutralizing free radicals while modulating inflammatory cytokines. It has also been studied for regulating a large number of genes tied to tissue repair, regeneration and stress response.
Areas of research interest
Most published research is in vitro or topical/cosmetic-science literature. Areas of interest include visible signs of skin aging, hair thinning or early hair loss, recovery after aesthetic procedures (microneedling, laser, resurfacing), and general tissue repair.
Who might consider researching it, and who should not
Discussed in the context of skin quality/anti-aging interest, hair thinning, recovery from aesthetic procedures, and sensitive or environmentally-stressed skin. It should be avoided by anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with a copper allergy or Wilson's disease (a copper-metabolism disorder), anyone with an active or infected open wound (without medical supervision), and minors.
Reported effects to be aware of
Reported effects are generally mild — skin irritation and redness have been reported, and injectable use in particular should be approached cautiously given limited regulation. Sun protection is commonly recommended alongside use, since sun exposure can reduce visible skin results.
